What a medical visa is for

India issues a specific visa category for people travelling to receive medical treatment, separate from a tourist visa. It exists because the purpose of travel is different and because hospitals and immigration authorities need to see that treatment is genuinely arranged.

Travelling for treatment on a tourist visa is a mistake worth avoiding. It can complicate admission at the hospital and creates problems if your stay needs to be extended for recovery.

Documents you will generally be asked for

Requirements are set by the Indian mission in your country and can differ, so treat this as a preparation list rather than the final word:

  • Passport valid well beyond your intended stay, with blank pages
  • Completed visa application form
  • Recent photographs to the mission's specification
  • A letter from the treating hospital in India confirming the proposed treatment
  • Medical records supporting the need for treatment — diagnosis, imaging and reports
  • Proof of the relationship for anyone travelling as your attendant
  • Evidence of ability to meet the cost of treatment and stay
  • Proof of residence and return travel intent

The hospital letter is the piece that takes longest

Everything else on that list is in your hands. The hospital letter is not, and it is the single most common cause of delay.

The hospital can only issue it once a treating consultant has reviewed your records and agreed to accept your case. That is why we ask for your reports early — the review has to happen before the letter exists, and the letter has to exist before you apply.

Attendants

Most patients travel with a family member. Attendants apply under the corresponding attendant category, which is linked to the patient's application, and will need to show the relationship. Decide early how many people are travelling, because adding someone late means starting a separate application.

What we do, and what we cannot do

We help you assemble the documentation and we obtain the hospital letter on your behalf. We prepare the file so it is complete before you submit it.

We do not issue visas and we have no influence over the decision or the timing. No facilitator does. Anyone promising you a guaranteed visa, or a specific processing time, is describing something outside their control.

Plan for uncertainty

Because the outcome and timing are not ours to control, book flexible travel where you can and avoid committing to non-refundable arrangements around an assumed approval date. If a decision takes longer than expected, we will keep the hospital appointment position under review for you.

Extending your stay

Recovery sometimes takes longer than planned. If you need to remain beyond your visa validity, raise it with us and the hospital as early as you can rather than close to expiry — extensions are handled by the authorities and need supporting documentation from the treating hospital.

Before you apply

  • Confirm the current requirements with the Indian mission in your own country
  • Have your reports uploaded so the hospital review can begin
  • Decide who is travelling with you
  • Keep originals of everything you submit
